West Forsyth got in one final tune-up ahead of area play on Saturday, winning four out of fives matchups on the road against opponents from Gwinnett.
The Wolverines started the day strong against Archer in a two-game win (25-9, 25-16), delivering a brilliant offensive showing with 19 kills.
West then overcame an opening loss in the second match against No. 9-ranked North Gwinnett and rallied to win 18-25, 25-18, 25-17. The defensive effort stepped up a notch in game two behind seniors Jessica Feltracco and Megan Pepe, delivering a half-dozen blocks and point wins to shut down the Bulldog offense.
The win against North Gwinnett proved to be no fluke as West handed No. 10 Brookwood a 25-21, 25-17 loss in the third meeting of the day.
Buford dealt the Wolverines their only loss on the day, but they came back to finish off with a 25-11, 25-14 win over Locust Grove.
Earlier in the week, West opened at home with wins against Lumpkin County and Pickens, led by a strong offensive showing by Pepe. The Wolverines delivered 45 kills and 15 serving aces during the Aug. 24 doubleheader.
The team then split a pair of matches on the road against Gwinnett foes Aug. 26, when an easy win over Dacula was followed with a heartbreaking loss to Mill Creek. The Wolverines sputtered against the Lady Hawks as hitting and serving errors hindered the offensive attack.
West closed a ninepoint deficit to tie the deciding game, but the Hawks pulled it out by two points.
“We made too many mental mistakes,” West coach Jim Orr said after the game, but praised his players for the comeback, saying they “had it in their grasp” but couldn’t close the win.
West faces North Hall and Johnson Thursday at N. Hall.
