ALPHARETTA — A few weeks into the season, West Forsyth’s girls seem to be making themselves right at home in Region 6-AAAAA.

On Monday, the Lady Wolverines rode dominant pitching and exploited shaky fielding to shut down Alpharetta in a run-ruled 10-0 road win.

West holds a half-game lead over Milton for first place in the new region with a 4-0 record so far.

Pacing West (9-2 overall) to the win were Kallie Martin and Avery Migues, who combined for five innings of three-hit, shutout baseball in the abbreviated game. Martin struck out eight Raiders through the first three innings, before Migues took over with West leading 9-0.

“I thought Kallie got in a pretty good little groove, was throwing the ball real well,” West coach Byron Orr said, noting that Martin pitched on Friday and twice on Saturday before the Alpharetta game.

Orr said Migues isn’t his hardest thrower, but finds the strike zone and keeps hitters off balance with her motion.

“They’re going to to hit her some, but if you’ve got pretty good players in the field, you’re going to be alright [with her out there],” the coach said.

West put the bat on the ball all afternoon and ended up with seven hits. But the Lady Wolverines really benefited from their opponents’ struggles on defense, as Alpharetta conceded eight errors in the game, directly leading to four of West’s 10 runs.

Taylor Hatch recorded the best night at the plate for West, going 2-for-2 with 3 RBI and reaching on an error in the second. Hatch drove in two runs with a rocket to deep right field in the second inning that went for a triple in her second at-bat of the frame, and laid a single down the left field line with runners at the corners in the fourth, driving in West’s final run of the game.

Maci Fletcher (2-for-2, 2 RBI) and Martin (2-for-2, walk, RBI) also had good offensive outputs for West.

After scoring twice in the bottom of the first, West broke out with seven runs in the second frame. West sent 11 batters to the plate during the inning.

Alpharetta’s best scoring chance came in the top of the third. Jenna Forte drew a walk from Martin to lead off the inning, then Baylee Kennedy got on with a single. A wild pitch put the runners at second and third with no outs.

Martin emphatically worked out of the jam with three consecutive strikeouts, ending the threat.

Orr said he felt the team would be competitive this year, but added the preseason move-ins by Fletcher and Migues have allowed him to be more flexible with the lineup.

Not only do both additions give the team options on the mound, but having one in allows him to move Martin to second base, giving the team a stronger defense, the coach said.

Orr said that if the girls can tighten up their defense at the corners and on steals, as well as get more production from the bottom of the lineup, he likes their chances the rest of the season.

“If we can improve those areas, I feel like our defense and our pitching will be good enough to help us throughout the year. I don’t know if we can win the region, but I think we can compete for that,” he said.

West faces Centennial on the road in a rescheduled game this Wednesday before hosting Roswell Thursday.
