West Forsyth coach Dennis Stromie preaches the value of every point to his wrestlers. On Wednesday, the reason became clear.

Another team point from any match would have given the Wolverines an outright championship at Lambert’s Hook ‘Em Horns Holiday Clash.

Instead, West settled for a tie with a beat-up Jefferson squad, as the Wolverines and Dragons each ended up with 237 points atop the 12-team field.

Lambert coach Kevin Contardi jokingly suggested that the coaches wrestle it out to settle the stalemate, before concluding that each team would get a championship trophy.

“It’s a long two-day tournament, so we had opportunities in the finals to get more points in a variety of ways and it didn’t happen,” Stromie said.

“You’re winning by 14, you get one more takedown, you get a [technical fall], there’s an extra half point. Or you’re winning by seven, turn him one more time and you get a [major decision], there’s an extra point.

“Everybody has a million of those and you preach that to the kids all the time, but sometimes they don’t really realize it’s that important until you get in a situation like that.”

West ended up with seven top-4 placers at the event, including three winners. Toby Crittendon (103 pounds), Cody Westray (112) and Tyler Everton (160) each won their brackets.

Paul Fallows finished second at the heavyweight division, Colton Cloud (171) and Reice Thompson (189) each finished third, and Nick Vogel came in fourth at 140.

Jefferson had four weight class winners on its side.

“They’re down right now, because they’ve got five or six starters out of the lineup because they’re injured or they’re sick. They got two hurt yesterday that would have placed high today, so they just had some bad luck this weekend,” Stromie said of the traditional state powerhouse Dragons.

Finishing third in the team points was North Forsyth, with 187.5.

Shane Cross (130) and Ryan Cross (135) both won their weights for the Raiders.

Luke Slayton (112) and Mitchell Abreu (152) were runners up for North. Travis Scott (119) and Dillon Martin (171) both placed fourth.

Raiders coach Travis Jarrard said that despite the individual success of some of his guys, the team didn’t reach its full potential.

“At the end of the day, looking at placers and stuff like that, at this point in the season, that doesn’t necessarily judge how we did,” Jarrard said.

“Six placers is nice, two champs is nice, but overall we didn’t wrestle that well, plain and simple. ... The kids wrestled hard. It wasn’t a thing where we just went out there and didn’t care.”

Lambert finished with 109 points, coming in ninth. Aaron Shealy was the highest finisher for the host Longhorns, finishing second at 215 pounds. Andrew Morin (103) and Michael Nelems (125) were both third place finishers.

South Forsyth finished 10th, with 97 points and four placers. Ryan Prisco (130) and Garrett Smith (189) were runners-up, and Daniel Rech (103) and C.R. Kimball (135) came in fourth.
