The laundry list came into focus Friday night for Jeff Arnette.

South Forsyth’s head coach had plenty to mull over following a 32-25 scrimmage loss to Winder-Barrow on Friday at War Eagle Field, a performance that highlighted the War Eagles’ strengths — and several weaknesses.

Though starting quarterback Jantzen Jeffrey threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns and fullback Brett Larkin added a pair of rushing scores, South committed five turnovers and allowed Bulldoggs running back Jamonte Riden to score three first half touchdowns.

"There were so many mistakes that I’m going to have to watch the film before I tell you all the things that we’ve got to correct," Arnette said.

"We didn’t come out in the first half and play the way we should have played."

Trailing 25-24 late in the fourth quarter, the Bulldoggs pieced together a scoring drive that reflected South’s Jekyll and Hyde night.

The visitors were pushed back 20 yards to their goal line before coming up with a series of big plays which culminated in Christian Hodge’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Quinton Long, followed by a two-point conversion reception by Dante Jones.

South led throughout the first quarter before Riden became a factor. Jeffrey connected with Hunter Beeghley in the flat for an 85-yard touchdown reception, with the help of a key block by Brandon Fehr.

The lead switched four times in the first half, with Riden doing all the running for Winder-Barrow. His 70-yard touchdown run moved the visitors ahead 7-6 in the first quarter, before his scoring rushes of 60 and 21 yards, respectively, pulled the Bulldoggs ahead 21-12 at halftime.

Jeffrey, under center all night, led a 49-yard touchdown drive with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter. The junior quarterback found Nick Cochran open in the corner of the end zone for a 14-yard strike, narrowing the gap to 21-18.

The War Eagles slipped behind 24-18 following a 35-yard field goal in the final minute of the third quarter but rallied again in the fourth quarter.

A goal-line touchdown run by Larkin with 5:26 remaining capped an 85-yard drive that was kept alive on a 39-yard reception by Fehr.

Brandon Mckee’s extra point connected to put the War Eagles briefly ahead, but it was the only extra point South connected on during the night.

"Sometimes it’s hard to come back when you’re down by two scores, but we did it and went ahead a point," said Arnette. "We’ve just got to put two halves together."

With South off this Friday ahead of the Aug. 26 opener, the coach feels the extra preparation time could prove important.

"We’ll go to work and get better," he said. "We’re playing a lot of young kids, so it’s going to take us a while to get rolling."
