Playoff hopes are still alive at South Forsyth, after the War Eagles girls lacrosse team breezed past county rival West Forsyth Friday, taking a 19-6 decision at the Wolverines’ field.

South (11-3-1 overall, 3-1-1 Area 6) jumped to a 10-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes before the Lady Wolverines (8-6, 2-4) recovered a bit in the second half.

“I thought it was a good game. I really thought West came out hard, to fight,” South coach Katie Richelt said.
“They never let up, and we came out ready to go, and the girls had it in their mind that we were going to win tonight.”

Jenna Kasmarik led the way for the Lady Eagles, scoring nine goals, including four in the first eight minutes of the game, helping South build a big lead that the Wolverines couldn’t climb out of.

“[We had a] big start, and I think that we worked a lot on defense and we worked a lot on getting possession of the ball yesterday in practice, so we really focused on getting possession of it and taking care of it,” Richelt said.

Also with solid performances for South were Lindsay Burnell (four goals, two assists) and Hannah Yarbrough (two goals).

Nikki Erdely scored five times for West Forsyth.

Richelt credited goalie Hanna Fox for clamping down late in the game, preventing West from establishing any momentum and preserving the big lead.

“She had a phenomenal end of the game. ... She really held us in it at the end there. I was quite proud of her,” the coach said.

The win counts as an area victory in lacrosse, which has only one classification rather than splitting schools up by size.
With the win, South preserves a shot at the state playoffs. The War Eagles travel to No. 7 Roswell Tuesday, where a win would send South to the postseason.
