Week 2 was a happy one around Forsyth County last season, with the four public schools all picking up victories on the same night. A repeat this year would be a morale booster for local squads, with three Forsyth teams entering tonight looking for their first win.

South Forsyth and West Forsyth are on the road tonight, with the War Eagles facing South Gwinnett in Snellville and the Wolverines heading to Bartow County to meet Adairsville.

North Forsyth plays its first home game of the year, welcoming the Johnson Knights from neighboring Hall County.

Pinecrest Academy plays host to Windsor Academy from Macon.

Forsyth Central wraps up the weekend action with a trip to DeKalb County on Saturday afternoon to face Lithonia.

The Lambert junior varsity was set to play host to Chestatee on Thursday.

Johnson (0-1) at North Forsyth (1-0)

The Raiders play their home opener after an impressive 37-0 win over West Forsyth a week ago. They now face another Region 7-AAA team in Johnson, who dropped a 20-3 decision to North Hall last week.

“The main concern I have is for our team. We really focused in for the West game and played with a lot of emotion and played hard. My challenge is for our team to bring the same enthusiasm and focus for Game 2 vs. Johnson,” North head coach Jared Zito said.

Zito says the Knights have several good athletes, led by senior quarterback Anthony Prophet, whom he says is capable of taking the game into his own hands.

The Knights also feature a tough, physical defense, Zito said, which will make keeping the Johnson offense on the sidelines a challenge.

North pulled out a 17-14 win in this game last year. A win tonight would put the Raiders at 2-0 for the first time in four years.

West Forsyth (0-1) at Adairsville (1-0)

After getting blanked by county rivals North, the Wolverines need to hit the reset button.

Considering they drubbed the Class AA Tigers 77-30 in Cumming last year, you’d think this would a gimme for West.

Not so fast, says head coach Frank Hepler, who describes this year’s Adairsville bunch as much improved and notes that two-way athlete Vic Beasley recently committed to Clemson.

Also consider that the Tigers come in already punching above their weight, having defeated Class AAAA Woodland (Bartow) 28-20 in a county rivalry match last week.

“We will have our hands full. Our main focus [this week] was to get back to the basics and be a better team fundamentally,” Hepler said.

South Forsyth (0-1) at S. Gwinnett (1-0)

South Forsyth’s defense put up a valiant effort in a 14-0 loss to Alpharetta a week ago. Tonight, the War Eagles will have their hands full on that side of the ball, facing a South Gwinnett offense that piled up 562 yards in a 49-28 win over Norcross last Friday.

Running backs Aaron Wimberly and Trevon Walker led the way against the Blue Devils, while Vanderbilt recruit Jonathan Krause poses another threat at receiver.

The War Eagles topped the Comets 30-18 in last year’s meeting.

Forsyth Central (0-1) at Lithonia (0-1)

Central’s non-region schedule is gone in a flash, with last week’s 34-17 loss to McIntosh serving as the Bulldogs’ only tune-up before region play.

The Dawgs now open their nine-game Region 6-AAAA slate against another bunch of Bulldogs from Lithonia. The game will be played at Hallford Stadium in Clarkston.

This was Central’s game a year ago, as the Dawgs took a 28-14 win at home, but head coach Chris Bennett says Lithonia looks better on film this year.

Lithonia started the season with a 24-6 loss to Avondale last week.

“Our main focus this week has been us. We have to take care of ourselves and correct our mistakes from last week — no matter who we are playing,” Bennett said.

This is one of three Saturday games for Central this season.

Windsor (0-1) at Pinecrest  (1-1)

Pinecrest plays its third home game in three weeks, welcoming the Knights from Macon. Windsor has been one of the top teams in GISA’s Class AA the last two seasons, but were hit hard by graduation.

The Knights opened the year with a 41-6 loss to Flint River Academy last week.

Pinecrest coach Charles Wiggins said the Paladins have focused on discipline at practice this week, after racking up 120 yards of penalties and losing two fumbles in a 35-0 win over New Creation Christian Academy last week.

On defense, Wiggins sounds confident of his team’s abilities.

“We will need another stellar performance from defense this week. We are hoping that they can keep us in the games late where we can pull it out. Coach [Tom] Santoro and the defensive coaches did a really good job last week,” Wiggins said.

Windsor defeated Pinecrest 34-14 in last year’s meeting.
