DAWSONVILLE — After falling behind 6-0, there was little reason to believe that Lambert was on the cusp of making team history Monday night. But after trailing for most of the game, the Longhorns went on a late offensive rampage and scored more than twice as many runs than in their previous three games combined for an 18-9 win against Dawson County.

It was the first victory in the Lambert baseball program’s short history.

“It’s a great job by the boys coming out and getting that first win over a tough Dawson team,” said Lambert coach Jamie Corr. “I’m really proud of them.”

Pitcher Josh Eskew became the first Longhorn winner on the mound.

Trailing 6-4 after five innings, the Longhorns’ (1-3 overall) fortunes turned during a nine-run outburst in the top of the sixth.

After two walks and a bunt single from Brian Watson, Nick Biumi (3-for-4) tied the game with a bases loaded double to center field that scored Keith Grabowski (2-for-3) and Kyler Clifton. It was the first of three consecutive doubles for Lambert.

Shortstop Caden Bailey (3-for-4) followed with the second double, scoring Biumi and Watson to give Lambert its first lead of the game, 8-6. Zach Schlosser made it a hat trick with a double of his own, sending Bailey home for a 9-6 edge.

After facing seven batters, Dawson pitcher Olin Bearden was replaced by Luke Williamson, but the change made little difference for the Tigers (2-2 overall). By the time Grabowski came up to bat once more in the same inning, the bases were loaded again. The center fielder took advantage of the runners in scoring position with yet another Lambert double, scoring Schlosser and Schlesinger to boost the lead to 11-6.

A bases-loaded walk to Biumi accounted for another run before a wild pitch brought in Lambert’s final run of the inning, making it 13-6.

“We settled down, had good at-bats, kept guys on base, and came through with some clutch hitting,” said Corr. “Nick Biumi … and Caden Bailey had a great night, really leading us offensively.”

The pair combined to open Lambert’s scoring in the third inning, when Bailey hit a two-run home run following a Biumi double, narrowing the Tigers’ lead to 6-2.

Dawson got ahead by capitalizing on early Lambert errors. With two outs in the first inning, the Tigers went ahead 1-0 by taking advantage of back-to-back fielding mistakes on ground balls hit to third base.

Lambert’s problems continued in the second inning, when Dawson added four more runs. A first-pitch home run by Cody Marshall for a 2-0 lead was followed with the next three batters reaching base after a wild pitch, walk and single.

“Dawson hit the ball well. Couple that with a few defensive mistakes and we got down,” said Corr. “But we never panicked.”

But Dawson failed to score over the next three innings, while the Longhorns began to find their form. Biumi and Kennedy opened the fifth inning with consecutive singles, setting up Schlosser for a two-run double to center field that narrowed the gap to 6-4.

Dawson cut the lead to 13-8 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Gilreath, but Lambert put the game away with five more runs in the top of the seventh.

After Williamson walked four batters, hit another, and threw a wild pitch, Clifton cleared the bags with a bases-loaded triple.

Lambert is scheduled to face North Forsyth today at North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega.
