BALL GROUND — It might be a slow paced sport, but that doesn’t mean golf can’t raise your blood pressure at times.

On Tuesday, the Forsyth County boys golf championship came down to one tense playoff hole between North Forsyth and South Forsyth on the par-3 course at Hawks Ridge Golf Club.

North’s Philip Black hit a clutch 10-foot birdie to pace the Raiders to a one-stroke playoff victory and second straight county title.

That result came a day after Lambert’s girls won the county championship at the par-3 Hawks Ridge course.

“It’s almost like The Masters, huh?” North boys coach Nathan Turner said after Tuesday’s playoff.

The Raiders and War Eagles had both combined for scores of 230 on the 18-hole championship, leading to a 12-man one-hole tiebreaker.

North sent Black to the tee, along with Justin Stuart, Jake Edwards, C.J. Evans, Allan Watson and Travis Roe.

Representing South were Austin Uhjelyi, Chris Gugilielmo, Matt Mierzejewski, Sean Stanfill, Brian Bowes and Connor Paton.

All 12 guys teed off in succession, then headed down to the green as one to determine the outcome.

North had fewer balls on the green and around the pin to start, but in the end, the Raiders combined for 19 on the hole, with South needing 20 strokes to sink its six balls.

“We scattered it around, but we held it together. Philip’s birdie was the key shot ... so I’m proud of him for carrying the rock for us when we had to have it the most,” Turner said of his junior.

“I was about 10 feet away ... I looked at it and I decided not to play it outside the hole because I didn’t want to lip out, and it was on the left edge of the cup. I just made sure I got it there,” Black said.

South Coach Matt Loveless noted that his guys had played seven rounds of 18 holes in the last eight days.

“Today was just to recharge a little bit, get some golf in. ... Really a tournament like this shows your weaknesses, and that’s kind of what my intent was for them to play in this more than anything else,” Loveless said.

“It’s nice to see Nathan bringing his guys up because for a long time it was just us in the county and now we know for sure that North Forsyth is for real. They can play some golf.”

Both coaches were happy about the way the match ended, with each team having six players standing around the same green encouraging one another — a rare team setting for a sport that typically breaks its athletes up into small groups and spreads them across the course.

“You never see it. I looked over at Nathan and I said ‘This is going to be fun. Let’s do it,’” Loveless said of the playoff setting.

Lambert (241), West Forsyth (244) and Forsyth Central (248) rounded out the boys field.

West’s Davis Flynt recorded the lowest round with an even-par 54.

On Monday, Lambert’s Lady Longhorns ran away from the field to win the girls title. Lambert’s top two scorers combined for 57 over nine holes, 14 strokes ahead of West Forsyth (71).

North Forsyth (72), South Forsyth (81) and Forsyth Central (87) rounded out the girls field.

Lambert freshman Sloan Shanahan was the low medalist with a 27.

“I am very proud of the girls. They respond well to competition. All the credit goes to them, they have earned it,” Lambert coach Joel Posey said.
