If the past two months mean anything, the Region 7-AAA tennis tournaments could bring good things to Forsyth County’s two Class AAA schools.
With the regular season over, the boys and girls teams at Lambert and West Forsyth are all ranked in the top 10 and head into region with plenty of confidence.
“For a first year program, I think we’re doing awesome. My kids are just great, awesome athletes. I think they’re just great kids as well. Good students, good athletes, and I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Lambert boys coach Dan Levi said after his team’s April 1 regular season finale, a 5-0 win over East Hall at Sharon Springs that put the No. 7
Longhorns at 12-1 on the season (12-0 region).
Levi said a lot of his players have parents with coaching experience, contributing vastly to their understanding of the game.
“A lot of the kids have grown up around tennis and they probably know more about it than I do, to be honest with you,” the coach said.
The Longhorns didn’t drop a single game last Thursday, with Jake Bouchillon, Kevin Duffey and Kyle Chrzanowski (singles) and Nick Alesia/Calvin Kraakevik and Andy Smith/Ben Bassel (doubles) all taking their matches with the Vikings 6-0, 6-0.
After a first place finish in the subregion, the boys will have a first round bye when the region tournament begins next week at Alberta Banks Park in Flowery Branch.
The coach is expressing cautious confidence for his team’s chances to do well at region and state.
“I’m not going to be Joe Namath and guarantee a win or anything like that, but I like our chances,” Levi said.
Things are looking just as good for Lambert’s 6th-ranked girls, who also beat East Hall 5-0 last Thursday to wrap up the regular season, finishing 13-1 (11-1 region).
“We’re feeling pretty good, sitting pretty well right now,” coach Ali Conley said of her team.
“Key to the success is all about the girls. The girls, the parents, booster club, school support. I mean, we have everybody behind us.”
The Lady ‘Horns got straight set wins across the board in their regular season finale Thursday, with Kealee Heffner (6-0, 6-0); Sydney Topper (6-3 6-3); Mackenzie Bodin (6-2, 6-0); Taylor Lefton and Erica Hoggatt (6-0, 6-0); and Lauren Ewers and Lindsay Ettorre (6-0, 6-1) all coming out on top.
Conley said the team has come out and met many of its goals already, such as finishing at the top of the subregion and beating local non-county rivals Johns Creek and Northview.
The Lady Longhorns’ only loss has been at the hands of county and region rival West Forsyth, who also is looking good heading to the region tournament.
The Lady Wolverines sport a 14-3 record (11-1 region) and are ranked No. 4 in the state. They finished second in the subregion, after tying with Lambert.
Leading the Lady Wolverines on the court have been Jenna Brunner, Madison Umbaugh and Megan Aligheri in singles, while the tandems of Sydney Niemi/ Taylor Hensley and Savannah Miller/ Amanda Conklin have taken the court for doubles matches.
“The girls have been working extremely hard this year and are looking to make it to the finals of the region tournament for the third year in a row,” coach James Hallewell said.
West’s boys haven’t been quite as dominant, sporting a 10-7 record (8-4 region), but the Wolverines have clearly impressed the state’s coaches, as they’re tied for 10th in the latest GaSports.com coaches poll.
The Wolverines, third in the subregion, have been led by Jose Quiceno, Austin Todd, Christian Stanko and Ian Nadasdy at singles, along with the doubles tandems of Ben Holloway/Nadasdy and Jesse Magnussen/ Edmond Diffly.
“We have had a tough year with injuries and sickness, but the guys have worked incredibly hard and kept their spirits high, enabling them to overcome the obstacles that we have faced,” coach Phil Lyerly said.
